Age is just a number! And the grand dame of Indian food, Madhur Jaffrey, had proved just that with a 360-degree flip in her latest gansta avatar as ‘rap grandma’ in Zohran Mamdani aka Mr Cardamom’s newest hip-hop single Nani! A culinary legend, cookbook author, Hollywood actor, and now a rapper!
The music video shows 85-year-old Jaffrey evolve from a diminutive granny into a rebellious grandma sporting a loud look—unabashedly cursing and making profane gestures. In an interview with New York Times, she has compared the character of nani to playing Lady Macbeth.
With dark kohl rimmed eyes, bright red lips, silver wig, bright yellow beret and oversized sunglasses, the character describes herself as “85 years gold” and “the best damn Nani. For most who know Jaffrey, she is a petite lady accredited with demystifying desi Indian cuisine in the West with her numerous cookbooks and food columns across publications in the UK and US.
A noted Indian actress, Jaffrey is most remembered for her portrayal of Manjula in James Ivory’s Shakespeare Wallah. Her foray into the world of Indian food started off as a yearning for the proverbial ghar ka khana during her time in London and her first cook book was called An Invitation to Indian Cooking.
Her partner-in-crime in the music video, Mamdani also has a strong Indian connection. His mother is the critically-acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and the music single is dedicated to his own maternal grandmother, Praveen Nair, who was the founder of Salaam Balak Trust.
A true veteran and culinary queen, who has won millions across the world with her food, Jaffrey was also awarded with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Living Foodz Epicurean Guild Awards in 2018.
