Sweet Treats for Those Who Want to Stay off Butter and Ghee

No ghee, no butter? Here are some nutritionist-approved dairy-free sweets you can whip up


If turning vegan is your New Year resolution, then allow us to help you achieve your goal. Consulting nutritionist Shirin Kapadia tweaked recipes of popular sweets for people who plan to follow a vegan lifestyle for Living Foodz. Go ahead and try these delicious vegan sweets.

Kheer Recipe


Basmati rice- ½ cup (soaked for 15mins, then drained)
Almond milk- 2.5 to 3 cups
Cardamom powder- 1tsp
Raw cashew- 2to4tbsp
Raw sugar- ¼ cup
Finely chopped almonds- 2-3tbsp for garnishing


  • Add the basmati rice in 1½ cups of water and let it cook on medium flame for about 12-15minutes.
  • Blend cashews in almond milk till you get a smooth texture.
  • Put the cooked rice in the above blended mixture and mix it well until it becomes soft and smooth.
  • After this add sugar, cardamom powder and let it cook on low flame for another 15mins.
  • Meanwhile on another saucepan, add some oil and roast the nuts until they turn golden brown.
  • Garnish with nuts and raisins.
  • Let the mixture cool and serve it chilled.

Coconut Ladoos Recipe


Fresh coconut milk/packed coconut milk- 250ml
Grated coconut- 2cups
Cardamom powder- 1tsp
Jaggery- 100grams
Desiccated coconut powder- for garnish


  • Take a non-stick pan and roast the grated coconut until it turns golden brown.
  • Pour coconut milk and cook for another one minute.
  • Add cardamom powder and jaggery; continue to cook for a minute or until the jaggery melts and the liquid dries up.
  • Let the mixture cool, and make bite sized laddoos, after which, take some dried desiccated coconut powder in a plate and roll the laddoos over the coconut powder, till the ladoo is coated with coconut powder.
  • Serve!

Sheera Recipe



Rava/Semolina- 1cup
Sugar- 1cup
Oil- 1tbsp
Cardamom powder- 1tsp
Almond milk- 2cups
Cashew pieces- ¼-cup
Raisins- 2tbsp
A few strands of saffron, soaked in 2 tbsp. almond milk


  • In a small saucepan, heat some oil and toast the cashew nut pieces and raisins until the cashew nuts turn golden and the raisins plump up. Remove from pan and keep it aside.
  • On the medium flame, toast the rava /semolina in the same pan until it turns golden brown.
  • Remove it in a dish and set it aside.
  • In the same pan, add almond milk, sugar, saffron and cardamom powder. Bring it to a boil. Stir gently a couple of times to let the sugar dissolve.
  • Add the roasted rava /semolina, stir continuously to avoid the formation of lumps.
  • Serve it hot or at room temperature.

Add on: Garnish with the roasted cashews and raisins.

Mixed Dry Fruit Chikki Recipe


Almonds- ¼ cup
Pistachios- ¼ cup
Cashews- ¼ cup
White sesame seeds- 1cup
Jaggery- 1cup
Oil- 2tbsp.


  • Cut almonds, pistachio and cashew nuts into fine pieces.
  • Heat a pan, add the sesame seeds and dry roast on a medium flame till they splutter. Remove and keep it aside to cool.
  • In the same pan, add oil and roast all the mixed nuts for about a minute or two till they are golden brown. Remove and keep it aside to cool.
  • Take a steel plate and grease it with oil.
  • Place the saucepan on high flame and add oil and jaggery. Stir it continuously until the jaggery melts completely.
  • Immediately add all the roasted nuts to jaggery syrup. Mix it well.
  • Pour the mixture over the greased tray and flatten it using the greased rolling pin.
  • Once it cools down, cut it into desired pieces and store in an airtight container.

Chia Pudding Recipe

Chia Pudding


Chia seeds- 2tbsp
Honey- 2tbsp
Almond milk- 2cups
Mixed granola- 1cup
Fresh fruits-1 sliced banana with ½ cup of pomegranate seeds or mango finely chopped and ½ cup pomegranate seeds


  • Take small cups.
  • Add ½tsp of chia seeds in each serving.
  • Fill it half with almond milk. Mix and keep them aside in fridge for at least 4hours.
  • The chia seeds would have swollen up by now and taken on the consistency of a pudding.
  • Add honey and finely chopped fruits of your choice in every glass.
  • Garnish with finely roasted granola of your choice.
