Some unusual recipes and a great ambience make this a winner in our books

Tvum, which mean ‘You’ in Sanskrit, is an Indian diner located in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar and serves some little-known dishes from cuisines across the country. Two weekday dinners and the place was buzzing with corporate crowds bonding over food and drinks. The place is as popular on weekends among the young crowd.

What's Hot: Slow, Generous Food

The focus, as they emphasise in their literature, is about the provenance of ingredients, the way they are grown etc, in short sustainability is the key. They also pledge their support for the ‘Slow Food Movement’.

The menu, which is purely Indian, intrigues with the choice of ingredients and regional dishes. From the Maharashtrian Khamang kakdi prawn koshimbir, the Thenga Manga Pattani Sundal, a snack-salad from Chennai's beach side hawkers. Other dishes that impress are the Konkani-Goan Surnache Kaap, a crispy fried spiced elephant-foot or the Chicken Bhujing, an East Indian masala marinated chicken, cooked on a charcoal grill and tossed with poha, for appetisers.

What's Not

The Amla Beetroot Tikki is an audacious and commendable move, however the tartness doesn't leave a mark. And the Hare Chane Ke Seekh was too dry to be interesting.  The mains, Safed Makkhan Paneer, that came in tangy tomato gravy was okay and the spicier Chicken Sagoti was delicious. Based on a couple of experiences, the food seemed underplayed despite having tremendous potential. The food menu has a lot more to offer and I came out with the feeling that I have to go back!

The drink menu is comprehensive with cocktail menu in sync with the theme including flavours like Jamun, Tamarind, Curry leaves, Kokam, Cumin etc. The wine menu represents a couple of Indian wineries and includes their whole range and the imported selection comprises entry level selections from Chile, Spain and Italy. One of the hidden gems on their menu includes the Portia Ribera Del Duero, a Spanish heavyweight that is complex and provides good bang for the buck.

Ambience:

It seems like a house converted to a restaurant. The rooms housing the indoors with chequered tiling, arched windows give it a gymkhana like feel. The upstairs or the terrace sees brick-tile roofing like an old house and the candle lit tables with the green landscaping around gets Tvum a cent percent on the ambience.

Service:

The service at Tvum is attentive and polite. The manager did check back on the food and offered to replace the beetroot tikki which speaks a lot of customer centricity. Great to find this in a stand-alone space!

Rating:

Tvum is a great space with 5/5 on ambience and service. The theme of the cuisine is awesome but falls short on execution.  I will go back for more to Tvum but for now it’s a 4 on overall experience with a 3.5 on food.
