Paint the Town Living Coral: Pantone’s Colour of 2019

A nifty guide on how to include the Pantone’s colour of the year in a food lover’s life.

Annabelle D’Costa

The decision has been made. Living Coral it is.

The Pantone Colour Institute known for its colour matching system that’s religiously followed by a variety of industries, selected Living Coral—a golden-orange hue—as the colour of the year 2019, a part of its annual trends analysis.

This year’s search took Pantone to the depths of the oceans, which reflects the importance of reconnecting with nature, especially in times of climate change. Following 2018’s Pantone Colour of the Year, Ultra Violet, a bright, vibrant purple, Living Coral, reflects the warmth, nourishment, and shelter that coral reefs provide to all sea life.

"Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of living coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression," reads Pantone’s Instagram post.

Apart from the colour of the year, the institute has picked 72 other colours in eight color palettes that they predict will dominate the whole of 2019. One of the palettes that caught our eye was 'Cravings, a palette rich in vibrant reds, bright oranges and deep purples. According to reports, colour experts are drawn from the sensory experiences and memories of food and its importance in our lives, which are now being reinterpreted with a fresh outlook.

Pantone's Color Trend Report for Spring/Summer 2019 again takes inspiration from the culinary world. Colours such as Turmeric, Toffee, Sweet Corn and Soybean are directly related to foods that are in vogue. Pantone's description of these colours can easily make you hungry. Take Toffee, for instance, which has been defined as “deliciously irresistible, tasteful colour that whets the appetite”, while Sweet Corn is a colour that “tempts with its soft and buttery attitude”.

The year 2019 is surely going to be the year of food colours, which in turn will help influence the other trends. Going back to Living Coral, the colour of the year, which is the way forward for 2019 - from food and drinks to fashion and beauty, we’ve done all the homework to help you incorporate this warm and gorgeous colour in your daily lives:

Include Living Coral for a shot of health and a hint of colour:

Masoor Dal

Adding these tiny powerhouses to your diet promises you a host of health benefits - dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, potassium and folate, and also an incredible source of energy. From sambar and patties to khichdi, there are many ways with masoor dal.

Just one orange can provide you with about 100 mg of vitamin C, which constitutes 130 per cent of the daily recommended intake. You could even treat yourself to some orange-flavoured drinks and bakes and even make popsicles.

There is a reason Bugs Bunny was addicted to crunchy carrots. Besides being a healthy snack, this veggie is also a weight loss friendly food and making it part of your daily diet can help lower your cholesterol and improve your eye health.

This is a rich source of vitamin A, which works as an antioxidant, giving you enough reasons to add it to your smoothies, shakes and even desserts.

The pitted fruit is known to be high in potassium and fibre, apricots are a good source of vitamin B6, which is known to reduce depression. Add these coral-coloured beauties into your pies, tarts or simply blend them into your favourite shakes and smoothies.

Seafood lovers could simply turn to salmon, a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, making it the best choice for youthful skin. Either bake, grill or make a salmon salad.
