Butter chicken or murgh makhani holds a revered place in India’s culinary landscape. Now, while there may be no need to tamper with the classic dish, restaurants and chefs across Mumbai are always trying to innovate with the dish presenting new avatars to attract customers. From butter chicken pizza to butter chicken bao, and butter chicken mac and cheese, here’s a list of all the funky interpretations of the classic butter chicken.

Black Label Butter Chicken

Resto-pub chain Social takes the classic butter chicken to the next level by adding about 15-20ml whiskey to it. They add the alcohol to the butter chicken once it is ready to serve, so that the preparation gets a distinctive bitter-sweet flavour and a subtle kick.

Butter Chicken Pizza

Indian food meets Italian at Joey’s Pizza (Andheri and Malad), Talaiva (Lower Parel), and several others big and small eateries in the city of dreams. In fact, butter chicken pizza has found its way in all big, small, Indian or international pizzeria chains, such is the popularity of butter chicken.While some are taking to store-bought base for butter chicken pizzas, there are a few who are making both, butter chicken and pizza base, from scratch.

Butter Chicken Sliders

Sardaarji (Juhu and Lokhandwala) serves sliders or hot pockets that are basically cheese naans stuffed generously with buttery and spicy murgh makhani. Not just this, they also have chicken tikka masala slider, and chicken Baghdadi slider.

Butter Chicken Roll

For people who are always on-the-go or after a late night at a club, a butter chicken roll is an easy and no-fuss option. It’s basically butter chicken with finely chopped onions wrapped in a freshly made, soft roomali roti. Although butter chicken roll is available at various eateries in the city such as Mini Punjab and Sigdi in Bandra, and Bademiyan in Colaba, nothing beats Goila Butter Chicken ’s signature version of this popular dish.

Butter Chicken Biryani

Fusion dishes like these make for the perfect treat on special occasions and festivals. Just imagine ambrosial butter chicken covered with a thick layer of rice, steamed with aromatic spices and herbs. Can this get any better? Well, we don’t think so! Butter Chicken Bunny Chow

A couple of restaurants in Mumbai gave the classic butter chicken a makeover by combining it with South Africa’s popular street snack, Bunny Chow. It is essentially a curry housed inside a hollow bread loaf. At 145 Kala Ghoda, you can try the Indian version of this snack. It makes for a great snack with a tipple in hand.

Butter Chicken Mac and Cheese

Here’s another dish that marries two classics—butter chicken and mac and cheese —to make an over-the-top, decadent meal. Tamasha, Lower Parel, serves mac and cheese topped with homemade butter chicken gravy. The dish is baked with more cheese on top to make it more gooey and rich.

Butter Chicken Bun

Of the many eclectic dishes served at resto-pub chain Farzi Café is this butter chicken bun. It is a steamed bun that comes stuffed with some chilli mayo and a generous portion of butter chicken. This is one of those dishes that look simple but, once you bite into it, surprises you with a burst a flavours.
