A three-month-long monsoon-induced lull later, the restaurant space in Mumbai erupted in 2019, with a chain of openings in quick succession that cater to the myriad needs of Mumbaikars. From elegant diners to quaint health cafes, it’s all in here. Now, we are almost through with the first month of 2020 and if you still haven’t visited these spaces in Mumbai, then head to these bars, cafes and restaurants ASAP! What are you waiting for?

The Sassy Spoon


Around since 2013, this trendy resto-bar that serves global cuisine has earned quite the patronage over the years. At its newest outlet in Powai, the meal will be governed by an overarching theme, Travel the World on a Plate. Expect dishes from across ten countries, including Turkey, Korea, France, Malaysia and Indonesia, along with a few options from their keto and vegan friendly menu. Sip on signature and classic cocktails, liquors, or mocktails if you’re staying clean!

Crispy Duck Pancakes at House of Mandarin 

Ride on the resurgent wave of Chinese and Cantonese food and head to this Powai-based diner that is dishing out familiar Indian Chinese in a modern format. Tuck into delicacies such as spicy crabmeat soup, aromatic crispy duck pancakes, spicy mapo tofu and lobster on a bed of soft noodles and pair them with in-house cocktails or fine spirits for an Asian extravaganza.

Authentic, home-style fare, TTR has been lauded for its no-nonsense food, so have faith and try the meaty jackfruit cutlet or the supple mini gun powder idlis alongside signature cocktails like Pondicherry punch, and guava Mary. From the mains, opt for classic treats, such as mutton korma and Sivagami’s crab kolumbu.

A slew of restaurant openings in the locality is forcing us to reconsider Powai as the new cool hub of Mumbai. Restaurateur Riyaaz Amlani’s most popular project, national bar-chain Social, has found a new abode in the lakeside neighbourhood. The space will embody the spirit of this city’s local parks, and thereby feature upcycled material along with keg cocktails and wood-fire oven pizzas!

The year that just went by has undoubtedly been a good one for partners Jérémie Sabbagh, Pierre Labail and Antonia Achache, who bagged a mighty funding to aid them expand operations of their brand Suzette. After foraying into their first-ever bakery in 2019 adjoining their Bandra-based café, Sabbagh, Labail and Achache opened an outlet in Colaba. This incidentally replaced the once iconic dive bar in South Mumbai, Alps. If you find yourself in the tony neighbourhood and are craving a quick healthy fix, be sure to drop by.

It would be reductive to call BKC up-and-coming considering that its teeming with a bunch of restaurants, bars, cafes and fine-dines. Latest in the line of F&B establishments to have sprung up in the area is Keenan and Ryan Tham’s Asian tapas bar chain, Foo. Enjoy affordable cocktails along with fun treats like chilli duck dumplings and hakka Belgium pork belly at the cosily done-up space.

Auber-Gin

Vegetarians, there’s some good news for you. Breach Candy has another hotspot for herbivores called Auber-Gin, which as the name suggests, tries to focus on gin-based cocktails with a few dishes that play around with the eponymous aubergine. Pick from comforting plates like charcoal spaghetti or the aubergine pizza. But since veteran mixologist Shatbhi Basu is the one behind the bar menu, we’d suggest you go there for the tipples.

With a modern, lounge-y ambience and a range of artisanal cocktails like with cool names like, vice paloma, Richmond Park, la bella, Britain's cup, infatuation and Cuban crush, Vice, themed around a gentlemen’s club, sounds like the perfect place to kickstart your weekend.

After joining hands with Riyaaz Amlani for their first joint venture in Mumbai, Worli-based Slink and Bardot, partners Nick Harrison and chef Alexis Gielbum are back with their second lovechild, a French bistro-style restaurant at Churchgate. Treat yourself to authentic French dishes such as ratatouille, soupe à l’onion gratinée—classic French onion soup, bosumeuf bourguignon or a good old lobster thermidore!
