It's Happy Tummy and Happy Football Fans at Monkey Bar

Why go to Russia when Monkey Bar brings the FIFA World Cup stadium to you. And while you’re drowning yourself in the football frenzy, keep that tummy happy with their special Halftime Menu

Annabelle D’Costa

As football fans ready themselves for the FIFA frenzy, the folks at Monkey Bar have set the stage right with their Halftime special menu that brings to you flavours from around the world without missing any famous football destination. Their football viewing-worthy snacks make it a season to eat and make merry!

If you ask us, drinks without chakna make for the shortest ever horror story. Not having the right accompaniment to your daaru can be a total deal breaker. But Monkey Bar’s Football Farsan -- a trio of munchies that includes curry and parmesan flavoured popcorn, chili and rosemary coated crispy peanuts and foxnuts dunked in honey and togarashi -- pair so well with almost any alcoholic drink that they are a match made in heaven (errr… Monkey Bar, to be precise).

Before you stuff yourself with these munchies alone, wait for England’s iconic dish -- fish and chips -- in a new and yummylicious avatar. Salty Fingers -- fish deep-fried in a crispy batter -- are served with sriracha sauce and make for a decent starter but didn't have us wanting for more. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, this dish was enough to ignite but not calm 'em hunger pangs.

What fish and chips couldn’t do, Frickles managed to. The deep-fried pickled cucumber, carrot and daikon radish (which we had never really seen being used in this way till today) was hands down the star of the night. The combination of super crunchy pickled veggies with mint cream gave the dish a nice sweet and sour flavour with an obvious dash of spiciness. It’ll be an understatement to say that we could gorge on that dish all day! Next to surprise our taste buds was the Mexican Wave -- soft flour tortilla with honey and chipotle chicken -- served with pico de gallo, cheddar cheese and sour cream. With a good filling, enough for you to lick the plate clean solo, these tortillas were another stunner.

Chips always make for a crowd pleaser and so did Monkey Bar’s Chicken Dip and Corn Chips. The super cheesy chicken dip is so addictive that you may want to forget all about the chips and dive straight into the ooey, gooey and oh-so-amazing bowl of dip.

Curry in a bread bowl? Err, something never heard of, right? If yes, then you should definitely be treating your palate to Mini Bunny Chow, where the traditional South African snack of a bread bowl and curried chicken gets a Monkey twist. Each bite into this bread bowl is as intriguing as its name. With just the right amount of spice and curry, this makes for a complete meal in itself if you can handle all the bread by yourself.

Germany’s favourite Kahn’s Hot Dog which comes in a chicken or pork sausage option in a hot dog bun is another great pick-me-up snack while you’re engrossed in the match action. Served with mustard, ketchup, sauerkraut, charred pepper sauce, sweet pickle relish and more, the juicy hot dogs didn’t manage to leave much of an impression on us. Another disappointment was No.10, a chili pork belly dish toasted in roasted garlic, chili and shallots. While all the fatty richness did give us a melt-in-your-mouth experience, the dish was too sour for our palates.

We washed all of that down with some of their signature cocktails and must say it was indeed a boozy affair. We started off with Copper Monkey (100 Pipers Deluxe, orange juice, passion fruit, mint and bitters) and oh-boy, it was the best choice ever. Allow yourself enough time between every sip to get a taste of all that’s in the drink. Next came Pack a Punch (rum, brandy, apple thyme shrub and cinnamon) which made way for a boozy cinnamon party in our mouths. The Mad Men (100 Pipers Deluxe, coffee-orange shrub, tonic and rosemary with Jim Beam) was another splendid beauty that made for a cool, easy-drinking cocktail that one could sip on all night. Must say, the Monkey Masala Soda (vodka, kaffir lime, and house masala soda) was not the best choice of the night. Blame it on the overpowering masala or our too-demanding palates.

That’s not all. If cocktails aren’t your thing, fret not. This place has something for everyone. Sip away your mid-week blues without having to empty your pockets with some excellent bottomless pitchers and beers. Whether you’re with your gang or a solo-rider, you could knock down some shots as they come at half the prices when called for every 45 minutes. Aur kya chahiye? With a wide selection of beers and spirits to sip on (all on a special price) – we couldn’t have asked for anything better!

Wake up the sports enthusiast in you as there’s so much more to Monkey Bar than food and drinks. With some mean indoor games lined up - Flip Cup, Beer Relay and Foosball – you wouldn’t regret ditching your heels for sneakers! Are you ready to goal the Halftime menu at Monkey bar yet?
