For decades ‘Haldi-doodh’ has been the go-to remedy for Indian households, for everything from cold, cough, inflammation and poor sleep. A teaspoon of fresh organic turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk is considered an antidote to every health ailment. Well almost. This healthy concoction has made its way into cafes world over as golden milk and is now rubbing shoulders with the likes of Americano, Mochaccino and Irish Coffee.

 

Golden Milk or turmeric milk is aromatic, light and healthy, a few reasons that have elevated the status of this simple Ayurvedic recipe. What makes turmeric milk such a favourite drink? Studies have found that turmeric is an antibacterial and antiseptic which makes it excellent to fight any bacterial and viral infections. It’s little surprise then that turmeric milk is considered the best remedy for cold and cough. It is also antiinflammatory and helps in digestion, keeping your internal organs in great shape and your gut happy. It is also an antioxidant, the regular consumption of which can keep the cells of the body healthy and slow down oxidative stress in the body which also means younger, glowing skin! Which is also why turmeric is still a much sought after beauty ingredient. And the tastiest way to have turmeric is by blending it with milk.

There is not just one way of having golden milk. For every day use to develop immunity and ingest some effective antioxidants, you can boil a small piece of fresh, organic turmeric or a teaspoon of turmeric powder with milk. As a remedy to cough though, a half-inch piece of ginger can be boiled with the above mixture. Alternately, you can use a few peppercorns instead of ginger for cold and cough. Some people even find making tea with golden milk tasty and nutritious. If you are vegan, you can replace dairy with any nut milk you prefer. Any which way you try golden milk, it is sure to not disappoint you. Go, get the power of gold!
