Four Ways to Beet Skin Problems

Beetroot can do so much more than merely helping up your health game

Annabelle D’Costa

There’s almost no nutrient that this veggie doesn’t boast of. Kavita Haldia, Head, Nutrition, VLCC says, “Beetroot is a rich source of iron, folate, vitamins A and C, K, beta-carotene, polyphenols, magnesium, antioxidants, dietary fibre and other important micronutrients too.” From helping lower blood pressure, boosting exercise performance, helping in detoxification and preventing dementia, there’s almost nothing that beetroot cannot handle.” But this humble veggie’s superpowers aren’t limited to boosting your health alone. They offer both intrinsic as well as extrinsic benefits, adds Haldia. “Beetroot possesses many nutritional properties, making it the secret to good health. Besides, it also has anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties which help flush out toxins from the body, helping reflect beauty from the inside out.”

While including beets in your daily diet in the form of raw or cooked salads, smoothies, soups or other yummy recipes can work wonders, you can also reap this veggie's benefits in other ways. Read on to know how you can include beetroots in your beauty regimen:

Kiss goodbye to acne and pimples

There’s nothing worse than waking up to a nasty zit on the day of an important meeting or date! If you’re someone who’s been fighting pimples for a long time and has not found the perfect cure as yet, look no further. Get rid of those over-the-counter creams and gels, and instead give this all natural veggie a try.

Haldia explains, “Beetroot is rich in phytonutrients which help to repair skin collagen thus reducing acne scars. Applying beet juice on the face soothes itching and inflammation around the pimples. Thanks to its antimicrobial properties, it also helps to reduce age spots.”

Drinking a glass of fresh beetroot juice every day can help you stay acne-free. You can also throw in a few carrot or cucumber slices for an extra dose of health. For topical application, mix around two tablespoons of beetroot juice with some yoghurt to make a smooth paste. Apply this evenly over the acne or blemishes and let dry. Wash with warm water and pat dry. Follow this twice a week, and soon you will be saying hello to youthful skin.

Make way for good hair days

Regular use of harsh shampoos and styling products can rob your hair of its natural shine giving rise to excess product build-up. If dandruff, dry scalp and hair fall are problems that you relate to, beetroot could be the answer to all your hair woes. The anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties of beetroot can be instrumental in promoting healthy hair growth, a clean and healthy scalp, helping restore its natural body. Haldia informs us that beets can also be used to combat auto-immune conditions such as alopecia.

Haldia says, “Beetroots are a powerhouse of nutrients such as manganese, copper, vitamin B6 and folic acid -- all of which help balance the pH of your hair and scalp, stimulating better circulation to the hair follicles and strengthening hair roots, preventing hair loss.”

To get started, depending on the length of your hair, boil the juice or pulp of two or three beetroots. Apply this directly onto your scalp and roots, covering the entire length of your hair. Do this twice a week for the best results.

Get rid of dark circles

Do the bags or circles under your eyes make you look older than you really are? Haldia says that there are multiple reasons for dark circles and puffy eyes -- stress and inadequate sleep being the most common. Turn to beetroot, and thank us later.

While its soothing properties help get rid of the bags under your eyes, its lightening properties take care of dark circles. Soak a cotton ball in some beetroot juice and apply generously over your eyes. When it dries, wash with cold water. Do this every night before going to bed to wake up to a fresh-looking face.

Haldia says, “Beets are a good source of lutein, an antioxidant which is known to protect the eyes from age-related macular degeneration. Besides, they also contain a wide variety of phytochemicals which can help improve the health of your eyes and nerve tissues.” Sip on a glass of beetroot juice daily to improve your eye health.

Pink lips all day, every day

Dark and chapped lips? Worry no more. If store-bought chapsticks and other lip care products are doing your lips more harm than good, it’s time you switch to something inexpensive and free of chemicals.

Haldia shares the perfect recipe to help keep your lips in the pink of health. In a bowl, mix one tablespoon of beetroot juice with one teaspoon of petroleum jelly and mix well. Leave it overnight in the fridge. Every night before going to bed, apply a generous layer of this paste on your lips and gently massage for five minutes. In no time this will turn in to your go-to lip balm!
