Bollywood actor and producer Dia Mirza shares her most favourite food haunts of Hyderabad.

When someone says Hyderabad, what’s the first thing that comes to your mouth… we mean mind? Is it the unparalleled Hyderabadi Biryani or rich Haleem or the flavourful broth Nihari? Or spicy Andhra delicacies such as Gutti Vankaya Kura (Stuffed Eggplant/Brinjal Curry) and Pachi Pulusu (Tamarind Curry-like Stew)? For one of Hyderabad’s most well-known citizens, it is a bit of both. Here’s Dia Mirza’s list of must-visit places to eat, if you’re in the Telangana capital.

Hyderabadi Biryani
Where: Shah Ghouse and Paradise

I love the… Biryani! As a child, I used to love the biryani at Paradise which was ridiculously good and was served in mammoth portions, but now I think Shah Ghouse restaurant has an edge because of its special tender mutton pieces and the aroma of the rice which transports you to a happy place with every spoon. Both these restaurants had humble beginnings as small stalls selling tea and snacks, and have both grown to have multiple outlets in the city and are always packed with customers.”

Nihari and Haleem
Where:
The Nizam Club (Club Membership or affiliated club membership required)

I love the… “lip-smacking Haleem is most commonly served during the Ramzan month or during special occasions such as weddings. A lot of hard work goes into making this stew-like delicacy but it’s well worth it because the taste is heavenly and is the best food to break your fast with. Similarly, their Nihari is spicy, delicious and full of flavour. Nothing can beat the Nihari and Haleem at The Nizam Club.”

Typical Telangana and Andhra food
Where: Rayalaseema Ruchulu and Southern Spice
I love the…“authentic Andhra food at Rayalaseema Ruchulu and Southern Spice. Both places make amazing Ulavacharu Kodi Pulao, Kodi Vepudu, Ragi Sangati and Andhra Igguru. Their thalis are popular as well, which offers great variety and is scrumptious.”
How to get there: Rayalaseema Ruchulu, HUDA Techno Enclave, Hitech City
For reservations: 040 4015 0011
And
How to get there: Southern Spice, Green Valley, Banjara Hills

Street food
Where:
Charminar, Old City Area
I love the… Chai and Osmania Biscuits. Then there is dosa and idlis dunked in plenty of butter, sweets and flavoured lassi, nihari, paya, sheermal and kebabs. The Charminar area is popular among tourists and shopping-lovers and the street caters to the food-loving pedestrians. The allure of the old city draws people interested in food walks and the diversity is amazing. You can eat all this and take in the old-world flavours.”
