Chennai’s ‘Amazing Auto’ Driver, Inspiring People One Ride at a Time

This enterprising auto driver from Chennai gives the three-wheeler a makeover and people are queueing up for a ride!

Arguably Chennai’s most loved autorickshaw driver, G Annadurai, popularly known as Anna, is the man behind Amazing Auto. Not your regular auto this—his vehicle is a multi-tasking machine, so your ride is assured to be as luxurious as the three-wheeler can afford. Sit back and pick from 10 newspapers, 40 magazines, play a game on a tablet, or laptop; tune into a television show, raid the mini refrigerator and enjoy free WiFi!

A class XII dropout, Anna’s entrepreneurial spirit and passion for customer service has brought him unprecedented success. So far, he has spoken at over 40 corporate offices across India and has delivered six TED talks based on ‘building consumer loyalty’. Amazing Auto has a website and an app too.

Born in Peravurani, a small town in the Thanjavur district, Anna’s family shifted to Chennai when he was four. His father was an autorickshaw driver and Anna followed his footsteps after dropping out of junior college. However, his approach towards the profession was different. “I believe that customer is god and I decided to make their journey in my auto comfortable and memorable, with entertainment, food, and beverages,” shares the cheerful Anna to Rakesh Raghunathan, host of Dakshin Diaries on LF.

Amazing Auto offers free services to school teachers, daily. “Teachers are the most valuable people in a society. You may be a doctor, engineer or a scientist, but the teachers lay the foundation for who we are,” he says, sagely. Anna also offers free or discounted rides on special occasions such as Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and Children’s Day.

Word-of-mouth has helped Anna get to where he stands today. If you plan on taking a ride in his ‘Amazing Auto’, you’ll need to book in advance. It’s worth the wait, we say!
