Celebrity Chef Gary Mehigan Joins Hands with Design Studio Nicobar

The ‘Indian Ocean’ collection is the result of Nicobar’s first international collaboration

From one cozy outlet in Mumbai's Kala Ghoda area to 11 sprawling ones, Nicobar, an Indian luxury and lifestyle brand has come a long way. But their most recent collaboration with Australian celebrity chef and host of MasterChef Australia, Gary Mehigan, has everyone yearning for this latest collection—Indian Ocean. The collaboration is also an association with Mehigan’s wife, Mandy Mehigan, and Motherland, the company behind some of the country’s most successful global brands, including Royal Enfield, Incredible !ndia and Make in India. 

The Indian Ocean line consists of a wide range of tropically-inflected cook, bake and serve-ware that celebrate simple meals meant to be cooked and enjoyed with friends and family. Launched against the backdrop of the Australian festival (a celebration of contemporary Australian culture with an aim to strengthen and deepen ties with India via arts, cultural and business activities)—which will go on until March—the collaboration brings together the best of both worlds – the rich traditions of India and the hip, new-age culinary culture of Australia.

The collection creates cultural cross-currents with the use of aboriginal and Indian aesthetic sensibilities—aboriginal art motifs on vessels designed to mix Indian spices, brass star-kissed lassi makers that are equally adept as cocktail shakers and a variety of accessories with organic accents and luminous shell and coral-inspired elements. The Indian Ocean collection is replete with smooth stone dinnerware, gently gleaming brass essentials, the classical Indian cast-iron cookware and bakeware that can be taken straight from the kitchen to the table.

“When I’m at home, I love to cook and, together with my wife, Mandy, and also love to entertain our friends. Mandy has created a beautiful atmosphere in our home with different design elements, mixing contemporary and traditional,” said Mehigan, who was discovered by Simran Lal, co-founder of Nicobar, while watching MasterChef Australia. “Those refined and sophisticated influences shine through in our first lifestyle collaboration for Nicobar, which also draws inspiration from the Indian home cooking,” he added.

This is the first international collaboration for Nicobar, a brand that has created a niche with long-lasting, not trend-driven, inspired by natural design and materials. This very distinctive aesthetic of the brand has resulted in them earning a quick fan base, blame their presence in the ‘untraditional’ luxury markets of Chennai and Jodhpur and such.
