5 Vegan Smoothies That Are As Good As a Meal

Vegan nutritionist Bhavna Kapoor shares recipes that power her day.

Smoothies are traditionally made using dairy products such as yogurt or milk. It is really simple to veganise your favourite smoothie by replacing the yogurt or milk with a creamy fruit such as banana or non-dairy yogurt or milk. Vegan nutritionist Bhavna Kapoor shares five of her most favourite recipes to power you day.

Green Smoothie
This is the simplest and the easiest one! Don’t get fooled by its green colour. It tastes yummy and it is extremely nutritious. The greens keep you full for much longer than only fruit smoothies too!
¾ cup spinach or kale
bunch of coriander and mint
1 frozen banana
1 inch slice of pineapple
tender coconut meat
1 cup coconut water
Pulse everything together till smooth. Serve.

Choco-Peanut Butter Smoothie
A list of vegan smoothies is not complete without peanut butter. Here’s my favorite version with chocolate twist. So easy to make!
3 tbsp peanut butter
1 banana
1 cup soya milk
2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
2-4 dates (to sweeten as per taste)
Blend everything together with ice cubes. Serve chilled.

Refreshing Tropical Smoothie/Popsicles
This all-fruit smoothie is extremely popular with children. Once made, you can freeze it in kulfi moulds. When half frozen, insert ice-cream sticks inside and freeze completely. It makes yummy orange popsicles!
½ cup papaya
½ cup pineapple
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
1 tbsp celery stalk
Few cubes of ice
Few soaked raisins if you like it sweeter.
Blend everything with water till smooth.

Strawberry Yoghurt Smoothie Bowl
I love smoothie bowls. They are a perfect replacement for breakfast cereal. This one is special because I know all vegans miss yoghurt. With this bowl, and trust me you won’t feel like you’re missing anything! The sourness of the strawberries and the creaminess of the avocado in this recipe gives you the exact taste and texture of yoghurt. In summer, replace strawberry with mango!
½ avocado
½ Banana
4-5 ripe red strawberries
A couple of dates if you like it sweeter
A few spoonfuls of frozen strawberries, figs, raisins, and any other berries.

  • Blend avocado, banana, strawberries and dates to form a gooey smoothie.
  • Transfer into a cereal bowl.
  • Top with spoonfuls of frozen berries.
  • Top the fruit with pumpkin/sunflower seeds. Enjoy.

Choco Chia Smoothie
I couldn’t resist sneaking in another chocolatey smoothie into my top five. This one is the God of good fats as it contains coconut milk and chia seeds. Word of caution – have this in moderation.
1 cup coconut milk
2 tbsp unsweetened coco powder
2 chikoos (with skin)
2 tbsp chia seeds
A dash of vanilla extract or cinnamon
Blend everything together. Sprinkle some more chia seeds on top! Enjoy chilled.
