Raw honey is considered a superfood thanks to its anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties that boost your immune system. Several A-list celebrities have given this ingredient their seal of approval and use it in their diet plan to reap all the goodness. But this superfood comes with a host of beauty benefits too. Historically, it has been used as an essential beauty ingredient as well as a healing agent.

"Honey can treat a lot of dermatological conditions such as acne, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis and chronic wounds. Besides these, honey is also great as a regular skin care add-on," says Mumbai-based Dr Apratim Goel, laser surgeon and cosmetic dermatologist, Cutis skin studio. Here are some useful ways you can incorporate honey into your skincare routine.

DIY honey and tea tree oil mask

If you have acne-prone skin then using honey and tea tree oil together will work best. Its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties help in reducing acne. Along with tea tree oil, which is known as a versatile essential oil used for various skin ailments, this face mask will improve your skin’s texture. Mix a tablespoon of honey with a few drops of tea tree oil and apply on your face. Wash it off with lukewarm water after about 20 minutes and pat dry your skin.

However, remember that honey will not work as well as anti-acne medication, so if you have moderate to severe acne, it is better to visit a dermatologist. "Honey cannot work on acne scars. It may reduce the inflammation thereby reducing the chances of hyperpigmentation some people get with acne but once there is a scar, you may need medical help,” says Dr Goel.

DIY honey and oats exfoliating mask

You can whip up a great exfoliating mask using honey and ground oats that work as a great natural exfoliator. Honey acts as a humectant so it helps water molecules stick to it thus making it a favourable ingredient in most moisturisers. Instead of your readily available scrub, you can rely on this DIY exfoliating mask to cleanse your skin. Mix three tablespoons of oats, a tablespoon of honey and a little bit of warm water (if necessary) in a bowl. Mix well and apply on your skin, massage and rinse it off with lukewarm water and use a clean towel to pat your skin dry.

DIY honey and coconut oil mask

If you have dry skin, you can make a quick moisturising mask using honey and coconut oil which will nourish your skin and leave it smooth. To make this mask, add equal quantities of raw honey and coconut oil, mix well and apply on your face and neck. Wait for 20 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water. This mask will leave your skin moisturised with a healthy glow.

Those who have sensitive skin can include rose water in their DIY mask. Pure rose water will help maintain your skin's pH value and because of its astringent properties, it also cleans the pores. To make your very own face mask dilute honey with equal quantity of rose water and apply it on your face and after 20 minutes wash it off and wipe your face with a soft and clean face towel.
