INGREDIENTS

  • 1 onion
  • 3 tomato
  • 1 cup lentils
  • 15 gm tamrind
  • papad for garnish
  • water
  • For spice mix
  • 7 cloves
  • 1tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp black peppercorns
  • 15 gms coriander leaves
  • For tempering
  • ghee
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 1/2 dried chilli
  • 1 sprigs curry leaves
  • salt and coriander leaves

PREPARATION

    Roughly chop onions and tomatoes.
  2. 2

    Pressure cook the onion, dal, tomatoes and tamarind with water for about three whistles.
  3. 3

    Coarsely crush garlic, cumin seeds, pepper corns and coriander leaves in a food processor to make the spice mix.

    Strain the dal water.
  5. 5

    In a pan, heat ghee; add mustard seeds, dried red chillies, curry leaves and the spice mix.

    Fry for few seconds.
  7. 7

    Add the strained dal water and season with salt.
  8. 8

    Add coriander leaves with stem and bring it to a boil.
